Vascular Treatments in Kochi

Dr. Pradip Abraham is a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at Medical Trust Hospital, MG Road, Ernakulam, Kochi – 682 016, Kerala. This page is a short overview of the conditions he treats and the treatment options for each, with a link to a detailed patient guide.

The right treatment depends on each person's condition and health, and is decided together after a consultation.

Vein Conditions

Varicose Veins

Enlarged, twisted leg veins caused by faulty valves inside the veins. Options range from compression stockings and lifestyle measures to minimally invasive procedures: endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation, glue ablation (VenaSeal) and foam sclerotherapy. Open surgery is recommended only in selected cases.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg, which can travel to the lungs. Treatment is mainly with blood-thinning medication; for extensive clots, catheter-directed thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy may be considered in selected cases.

Artery Conditions

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Narrowing of the leg arteries by fatty deposits, causing pain and weakness and, in advanced cases, tissue damage. Treatment includes risk-factor control, supervised exercise and medication, and where needed angioplasty, stenting or bypass surgery.

Limb Salvage for Critical Limb Ischaemia

The most severe stage of PAD, with rest pain, non-healing ulcers or gangrene. Treatment aims to restore blood flow and preserve the limb, using angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy or bypass surgery alongside wound care and infection control.

Diabetic Foot

Foot ulcers and infections caused by nerve damage and reduced blood supply in diabetes. Care combines wound debridement, infection control and offloading with revascularisation when circulation is reduced, working with diabetologists, podiatrists and wound care specialists.

Carotid Artery Disease

Narrowing of the neck arteries that supply the brain, an important cause of stroke and TIA. Treatment combines medication and lifestyle changes with, for significant narrowing, carotid endarterectomy or carotid artery stenting.

Aortic and Peripheral Aneurysms

A bulge in an artery wall, most often in the abdominal aorta. Small aneurysms are monitored with regular scans; larger ones may need repair by endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) or, in selected cases, open surgery.

Arterial Dissections

A tear in the inner layer of an artery wall. Depending on its type and location, management ranges from blood pressure control to endovascular stenting, bypass or open repair.

Dialysis Access

AV Fistula Surgery for Dialysis

A connection between an artery and a vein, usually at the wrist or elbow, that gives long-term access for haemodialysis. It is created as a day procedure under local anaesthesia and takes six to eight weeks to mature. Narrowing or clotting of an existing fistula can also be treated.

Procedures and Tests

Endovascular Procedures

Minimally invasive treatments carried out from inside the blood vessels through small punctures in the skin, including balloon angioplasty, stenting, EVAR, carotid stenting and catheter-directed thrombolysis.

Vascular Doppler Ultrasound

A non-invasive ultrasound scan of blood flow in the arteries and veins, used for diagnosis and treatment planning: carotid, leg arterial and venous studies, varicose vein mapping and AV fistula surveillance.

Other Conditions

Vascular Trauma

Emergency treatment of injuries to arteries and veins: control of bleeding, then repair of the vessel by direct repair, grafting or stenting.

Vascular Anomalies and Malformations

Vascular malformations and haemangiomas, present from birth or appearing later in life. Options include observation, sclerotherapy, embolisation, laser treatment or surgery, planned with radiologists, plastic surgeons and other specialists.
