WHAT IS OPTOMETRICS? NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE 2026

WHAT IS OPTOMETRICS? NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE 2026

It has been over two centuries since Humphrey Davy converted electricity to light, although a popular misconception is that it was Edison - more on that later. This was possible due to the invention of batteries and more importantly our understanding of the basic sciences. Today, solar powered panels, for all their flaws, are almost uniquitous in presence, if not application.

However, what was announced yesterday is probably more exciting than another banal lesson in the conversion of energy.
Karl Deisseroth (Stanford, USA), Peter Hegemann (Humbolt, Germany) and Georg Nagel (Würzburg, Germany) have been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize 2026 for Medicine for the discovery and application of the phenomenon of conversion of light into electrical impulses in living systems.

What began with the discovery of a protein (Channelrhodopsin) responsible the light-centric movement of the algae, Chlamydomonas, via activation of light-sensitive ionic channels was taken to a whole new level by the latter. He isolated the gene and successfully introduced it into rat nerve cells. Now shine a torch, and voila!, the neuron is fired.

This led to the remarkable novel field in neuroresearch called ‘optogenetics’. The clinical implications are viturally boundless, especially considering how little we know about the principles of brain function. It has been used to real-world practical solutions such as restoring partial vision in conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa.

How far does your imagination take you into this exciting new field? Or would you rather a shot of algae-gene to channel that inner Tesla within you?
